Running a profitable landscape division and having hourly employees are often oxymorons but with these three tips you can improve the efficiency and profitability of your landscape crews. First, make your foreman accountable for lost tools and broken equipment. Have your foreman fill complete an tool inventory/checklist at the end of each week but make sure it is accurate and enforce it when things are missing. Second, make sure you are running the right size crew. Often a two man crew is the perfect size for maintenance and a five man crew is perfect for commercial mowing, but be sure you aren’t switching the two up. Run your own time-in-motion studies. Third, make surprise visits to the job site to ensure everyone is being productive on site. Even the best employees can become lazy when they feel their work isn’t being checked.
